KOSUGI Takehisa
Based in Osaka
In 1960, Kosugi co-founded Group-Ongaku, the first collective improvisation group in Japan, with Yasunao Tone, Mieko Shiomi and others. In the early 1960’s, his event pieces were presented in the United States and Europe by members of avant-garde artists group Fluxus. From 1965 to 1967, he performed with Nam June Paik and other Fluxus members in New York, and gave concerts of his own works in Europe. In 1969, he co-founded Taj Mahal Travellers, and the group gave concerts in various locations in Japan and Europe. In 1977 he moved to USA, joining the Merce Cunningham Dance Company as a composer/performer, and touring with John Cage and David Tudor. He was music director of the company from 1995 to 2011. Kosugi has participated individually in various international festivals and exhibitions worldwide.
At Aichi Triennale 2016, Kosugi Takehisa will present works in two sections. In Performing Arts, he will perform a selection of his best-known works from the 1960s through the present. In Visual Arts, he will exhibit an installation including his most recent work presented in 2015.
