Moving away from the three-dimensional works he tackled in his early days, Hamasaki next moved into the new realm of two-dimensional works, a symbolic expression of which was his “Maze Painting.”

“Maze Painting” is a unique painting technique that Hamasaki perfected from the maze doodles he unconsciously drew as a child.

The maze painting technique became his signature style after the “Labyrinth Painting Exhibition” held in 1994, and is still used in his current life work, “In Flight Paintin’.”

Among his portraits using “Maze Painting,” he has painted portraits of various artists, including Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Van Gogh, and Michelangelo. In particular, his portraits related to “The Velvet Underground” include works by Lou Reed, John Cale, and Nico, and are in the possession of many collectors.

This exhibition will be a retrospective of the few remaining “Maze Painting” works by Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground in the gallery.
You can trace Hamasaki’s career through the Velvet Underground, who were a major influence on him.
